Successful Weight Loss and Weight Management

The Draelos Metabolic Center in Edmond, OK is your premier Oklahoma Medical Center specializing in all endocrine issues, particularly in weight loss and long-term weight management.

Dr. Matthew Draelos and his highly trained medical staff have devised comprehensive, physician-guided weight management strategies designed to help you achieve and maintain your goal weight.  We underistand that weight management is a highly personal issue, and, often, drenched in emotional issues as well. We address the full range of issues affecting you and your weight.

Although the specific issues affecting weight vary from person to person, we have worked with thousands of patients; and through that work, have found there are four core issues that affect almost everyone. These include: daily motivation and behavioral modification, proper nutrition, regular exercise and medications.

1.  Daily Motivation and Behavioral Modification

weight loss calendarThis is a biggie. It can best be summed up with the word:  MINDSET.  Achieving and maintaining the proper mindset is an essential first step for successful weight loss and weight management. Your mindset includes attitude, motivation, and determination, all of which translate into daily behavior.

At The Draelos Metabolic Center, we are truly an Oklahoma health center – a center focused on helping you achieve optimal health and well-being. We work closely with you to help create a roadmap for weight loss success. We know that challenges will arise, but we stand ready to work with you to adjust the plan to get over those hurdles and continue to help you move toward your ultimate goal.

Maintaining a healthy mindset depends on realistic goals and expectations.  We work closely with you, as a client, to make sure your hopes and goals are tempered with realism. Otherwise, you are setting yourself up for failure. Success is often measured in small steps and we help you celebrate each individual accomplishment.  Over time, each tiny step adds up to major weight loss successes!

In addition to providing you with encouragement during your regular visits, we provide daily tips, thoughts and suggestions to help you stay focused, positive and motivated.

We understand that life is hectic and often unpredictable.  To lose weight successfully, we will guide you in making positive changes to your busy life and help you identify and defeat the subtle psychological pressures that interfere with achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

2.  Proper Nutrition

Food is fuel for our bodies.  Some of it is healthy fuel and some not so healthy. Unfortunately, proper nutrition is not well taught in our culture. Many myths and inaccuracies about food have taken root and the result is extreme confusion.

At Draelos Metaoblic Center, we are here to help you sort through the many mixed messages out there to determine truth from fiction. Our medical, weight loss and dietary professionals have years of training and experience in the field of weight loss.  They understand the science of nutrition and how to develop a new eating strategy that provides proper nutrition to ensure the weight you lose is fat, not lean tissue.

Together, we will learn what works best for YOU.  Clearly, the traditional high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet simply is not effective for many people. With the one-on-one, focused attention you receive at our Edmond, Oklahoma clinic, you will better understand how to make the proper dietary choices for your needs and your lifestyle. We will also help set you on a practical schedule for what, when and how you should eat. IT is a system for success that has been proven over and over again with our weight loss patients and we believe one that will help you best achieve your weight loss goals.

In addition to healthy foods, we strongly encourage a variety of nutritional supplements to support and maintain optimal health.  We will work with you to develop an appropriate supplement regimen for you.

3.  Regular Exercise

Now, don’t groan!  Exercise is important to weight loss, but you do not have to train for a marathon to successfully incorporate it into your weight loss program. Sometimes, simple routine changes, such as parking a block from your destination or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, can have a huge cumulative impact on your overall fitness level.

exercise women-weights and aerobicThere’s no doubt about it…research clearly shows the benefits of routine exercise are immediate and long lasting. Did you know that a fit person burns more calories than a sedentary person?  Being fit increases your metabolism. That means your body burns more calories even when at rest.  It also means it better utilizes the calories consumed from a healthy diet plan.

Cardio or heart-pumping exercise is only part of the equation, though. We are learning that strength training is equally important, perhaps even more so, when you are losing weight. That’s because it helps you maintain or even increase your lean muscle mass. More muscle means a higher metabolism. This is because muscle tissue requires calories to exist and function, while fat tissue does not.  So even when you are sleeping, your muscle mass is burning calories, but your fat tissue is just taking up space. This is also why men tend to have a higher metabolism than women; they simply have more muscle mass. So ladies, guys really do have an edge over you when it comes to weight loss.

At the Draelos Metabolic Center, we work with you to figure out ways to boost the amount of exercise you're getting through your routine daily activities.

If possible, we also strongly encourage you to begin working out as part of a well-organized, medically-supervised, weight loss program.

What activities do you enjoy?  We’ll work to help you discover your own favorite forms of physical activity so you will be more likely to make exercise an enjoyable part of your daily life and an ally in your quest to a leaner, healthier you!

4.  Medications

Not everyone needs weight loss medications, but some people benefit from adding appetite suppressants or other pharmaceuticals to their weight loss plan.

The healthcare and weight loss professionals at the Draelos Medical Center combine their expertise to find safe and effective medications to better facilitate your weight loss goals should they be warranted.

Weight loss medications are never mandatory. They are entirely optional and not indicated for every weight loss patient.
